Paper Folding for Publishing Printing

Signatures, booklets and supplements — high-volume work where register has to hold across the whole run.

Publishing

Publishing work is volume plus register. A book signature that is folded a fraction out of position will not collate, and a supplement that varies across a run will not bind cleanly — so the machine is judged on how little it drifts, not on how fast it goes in a demonstration.

Two design details carry that: gear transmission instead of belt drive, so roller speed does not slip under load, and high-precision folding fences that hold the fold position from the first signature to the last. The T600 and T780 platforms carry both, at 180 m/min and 210 m/min respectively.

What gets folded in publishing

The folded products this sector buys, and the machine decision each one forces.

Book signatures

Parallel and cross folds for section-sewn and perfect-bound work.

Booklets and pamphlets

Multi-panel formats folded from a single sheet, often stitched after folding.

Newspaper and magazine supplements

High-volume folding where sustained speed and pile height decide output.

Subscription inserts

Small-format inserts folded at high speed and stacked for automated inserting.

What this sector demands

Production requirements to review when specifying equipment for this sector.

01

Register held across the run

Gear transmission and locking folding fences remove the two sources of drift: roller-speed slip and fence creep.

02

Sustained throughput

A 750 mm pile and non-stop feeding on the T600/T780 platform keep the folder running between reloads.

03

Mixed formats

Plate sets from 10+4 to 14+6 reach the standard signature and booklet patterns without tooling changes.

04

Signature integrity

Rollers must not mark or crack the fold line, which is what the spiral-pattern/polyurethane roller combination is for.

Production considerations

Publishing signatures require stable register through parallel and cross folds so sections collate and bind cleanly.

T600 and T780 configurations address different sheet formats. A compatible round-pile feeder can reduce stops on long batches. Set the fold pattern and feeder against the actual signature stock.
