Paper Folding for Commercial Printing

Brochures, catalogues, flyers and mailers — where changeover time, not top speed, decides the day.

Commercial printing

A commercial printer measures folding in jobs per shift, not sheets per hour. That makes pattern range and changeover speed the specification drivers: the same machine has to produce a tri-fold leaflet in the morning, a gate-fold programme in the afternoon and a cross-fold mailer before the shift ends, and each change has to be a plate reposition rather than a re-setup.

The SPEED commercial configuration is a buckle folder with enough plates to reach every standard pattern from one setup — typically the T600 for volume or the T490/T520 where miniature commercial work is also in the mix. Where a job needs both a buckle and a knife fold, a combination (buckle + knife) model produces it in one pass — ask for the current combination range.

What gets folded in commercial printing

The folded products this sector buys, and the machine decision each one forces.

Brochures and catalogues

Parallel, roll and gate folds in 100–200 gsm stock, folded square enough to stack flat.

Flyers and leaflets

High-volume A4/A3 tri-folds and half folds, often part of a direct-mail campaign.

Direct mail and self-mailers

Cross folds and right-angle folds where a knife or combination machine earns its place.

Programmes and menus

Gate and roll folds on heavier stock, usually needing creasing before folding.

What this sector demands

Production requirements to review when specifying equipment for this sector.

01

Changeover speed

Buckle plates are adjustable stops, so pattern changes are repositioning jobs. Plate count decides how many patterns are reachable from one setup.

02

Stock that changes with the job

Suction-wheel separation, double-sheet detection and adjustable creasing pressure across 28–200 gsm let the machine be set to the job rather than to an average.

03

Sustainable speed on real stock

Rated speed is a ceiling; the usable speed is the fastest at which your stock still folds within tolerance, which is what the fold test establishes.

04

Volume spikes

A 750 mm pile and 180 m/min sustained running absorb campaign peaks without a second shift on the folder.

Production considerations

Commercial print shops alternate between brochure, catalogue and mailer formats. Fold-pattern coverage and changeover time therefore matter alongside running speed.

T490, T600 and T780 configurations cover different sheet formats. Round-pile feeding can support longer runs on compatible T600 and T780 lines. Match the plate set and feeder to the real job mix.
